About The Experience

On 15 February 2025, Across the Radcliffe Line unfolded as a three-hour collaborative workshop inspired by Seema Kohli’s exploration of personal and familial histories in her exhibition Khula Aasman. Facilitated by Rubina Singh, the session invited participants to engage with memory as a living archive — shaped by migration, resilience, and intergenerational storytelling.

Kohli’s exhibition honours her own family’s migration from Dadan Khan village to Delhi during the 1947 Partition. Through her work, she reflects on resilience, hope, and the enduring power of both material and non-material memories carried across borders and generations. Drawing from this inquiry, the workshop encouraged participants to reconnect with their own family histories and personal archives.

Participants were invited to bring an object, or a photograph of an object, connected to their family’s experience of the 1947 Partition — whether first-hand or inherited. These personal artefacts became starting points for reflection, dialogue, and art-making in community. Through collective engagement, attendees explored how objects hold stories, emotions, and silences that shape identity.

The workshop built on processes of reconstructing narratives and critical fabulation, inviting participants to reimagine the lives of their chosen objects and to create alternative archives of resilience. Working together, the group formed a shared material archive — one shaped by memory, imagination, and care.
Over the course of the afternoon, stories of displacement, love, endurance, and belonging surfaced and intertwined. The session became a space not only for remembrance, but for reimagining — celebrating connection and the strength that emerges from shared histories.
