What a Body Remembers brought together a significant body of works by Seema Kohli that explored the relationship between memory, the body, and the cosmos. Curated by Lina Vincent Sunish and presented at Tao Art Gallery, the exhibition unfolded as an introspective reflection on lived experience and inner landscapes.

At the core of the exhibition was a series of 35 zinc plate etchings on paper titled Memoirs, developed over several years. These works drew from Kohli’s personal memories, including childhood impressions, people, environments, and emotional experiences, translating them into a visual language that moved between the figurative and the abstract.

The exhibition examined how memory resides within the body, not as a fixed archive but as a fluid and evolving presence. Kohli’s works navigated the intersections between the conscious and subconscious, the sacred and the everyday, and the real and the imagined. Through layered compositions and symbolic imagery, she created a space where memory could be revisited and re-experienced.

A central thread across the exhibition was her engagement with the feminine principle and Hiranyagarbha, the Golden Womb, as a generative source of creation. The works expanded beyond personal narrative to suggest a larger, universal framework where the body becomes a site of transformation and continuity.

Alongside the etchings, the exhibition included paintings and works on paper that revealed the foundational processes of her practice. These works offered insight into the evolution of her visual language, where line, gesture, and form become tools to articulate inner states of being.

Through What a Body Remembers, Kohli created a contemplative space where memory, body, and cosmos exist in continuous dialogue, allowing the personal to unfold into the universal.
