This catalogue is published by the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Bengaluru, in conjunction with ‘Kaal Netra: Sacred Matrices,’ a major solo exhibition detailing four decades of work by acclaimed artist Seema Kohli. The exhibition is an in-house curated exploration of the artist’s persistent engagement with Indian cosmology and the divine feminine (Shakti), viewing myth as a contemporary philosophical and socio-political matrix. Kohli’s practice re-contextualises sacred motifs across a diverse range of media, including painting, sculpture, and large-scale installations, often employing materials such as 24-karat gold leaf to signify light and ritualistic power. Featuring scholarly essays and an extensive visual documentation of works, the publication provides critical insight into the artist’s mythopoeic universe, which seamlessly integrates Tantric, Sufi, and Bhakti traditions to construct a cyclical and regenerative understanding of time and existence.
