Sensorium of Roots

About The Experience

On 17 February 2025, Sensorium of Roots was held at Seema Kohli Studio as a collaborative workshop within the framework of Khula Aasman, a solo project by Seema Kohli curated by Adwait.

The workshop invited students and scholars to explore the role of “sense-memory” within the politics of aesthetics. Khula Aasman itself was rooted in Kohli’s engagement with aural and written archives of her family’s origins in Pind Dadan Khan. Within the exhibition, the installation Dawakhana — developed in collaboration with Ishita Dey — retraced the historic Dawakhana of Hakim Chunni Lal Kohli, bringing together memory, healing, material culture, and sensory inheritance.

Building on this context, Sensorium of Roots examined how sensory methodologies can be used to revisit and reinterpret memory. Participants engaged in guided smell exercises, worked with field notes, and reflected on the sensorial challenges involved in designing a sensorium-based installation. The workshop also addressed the politics of perception — questioning how dominant sensory hierarchies shape understanding, and how they might be disrupted.

A key focus of the session was countermapping through the senses. Participants collectively transformed the Dawakhana space into a site of sensory inquiry, asking whether smell, sound, and embodied memory could generate alternative mappings of history and belonging. Through shared exercises and discussion, intersubjective sense-memories became tools for reimagining archives beyond the visual.

The workshop fostered a space of critical reflection and experimentation, extending Khula Aasman’s inquiry into migration, memory, and material culture by foregrounding the senses as active, political, and generative modes of knowledge.
