Unstitched: A celebration of the Saree: Journey and Exile Exhibit

“The chinar leaves melting their colour turn gold
The stars slept singing their lyrics to the deep cadmium sky
I saw the moon change into the golden sun
Satryus leaping and exhausting itself to chase
so did Icarus’s wings melt into the sun
I desire you as an autumn leaf to earth
Superficial wings carry my bodyless soul
engulfing my desires, fragrance, fragility, existence
I owe it to the duality of doubt
I wait for the alchemy of change.”

  • Seema Kohli, 2018

Seema Kohli’s saree Harud: Autumn was showcased at Asian Art Museum as part of the group exhibition Unstitched: A Celebration of the Saree on March 29, 2026. The exhibition was curated by Vara Ramakrishnan and the Lara Lakshmi Foundation.

She was introduced to Vara Ramakrishnan and the project through Gargi Seth of the Indian Art Circle. The theme of the project, Journey and Exile, immediately resonated with her.

Every time Seema visits California, the Redwood forests remind her of the Himalayan Deodar forests of her roots, while the maple trees and deer inhabiting them become a bridge between the two worlds. In the saree, the palla and blouse are anchored by the maple leaf, a motif flourishing across both landscapes. Along the border, deer prance gracefully, echoing the spirit of the forests.

The project evolved from Seema’s earlier body of work titled Harud, meaning autumn in Kashmiri. She developed a detailed khaka for the entire saree to ensure her vision was interpreted with precision, with the assistance of a digital artist.

The saree itself was provided by the Lara Lakshmi Foundation to maintain a cohesive spirit across the collection. Seema was particularly drawn to a deep cobalt blue, which the weavers achieved beautifully. Once the design was finalised, it was sent to Vara’s workshops, where embroidery brought the vision to life.

Harud becomes a metaphor for transition, renewal, and the layering of identity. Emerging from the silhouettes of autumn leaves is the image of Ardhanareeshwara — the embodiment of non-duality and the synthesis of masculine and feminine energies. Autumn, here, transforms into an act of shedding that becomes a powerful catalyst for renewal.
